Tracking changes in the geographic range, the beginning and ending of the calling season, and the population of frogs and toads in Canada can help us understand changes occurring in the environment.

About Frogs. Each species of frog and toad has a unique call. Click here to learn how to identify the frogs in your province. Listen for Frogs and Toads in the Spring. In Ontario, for example, frogs and toads call from March through August. As a FrogWatch volunteer, you would monitor these calls from spring through to the end of June.

The gray treefrog is a true "tree frog": it can be found at the top of even the tallest trees. These frogs are rarely seen outside the breeding season. In Ontario, the pickerel frog is the frog species most similar in appearance to the northern leopard frog. The pickerel frog's spots are angular and usually arranged into two rows down the back, whereas the leopard frog's spots are rounded or oval and are in a more random pattern.

One of the most common frogs in Ontario is the Wood Frog, or Lithobates sylvaticus. The dark mask-like pattern around the eyes of these tiny terrestrial frogs is what gives them their characteristic appearance; it is reminiscent of a raccoon's face. Wood frogs are common in the province's woodlands, ponds, and mixed forests.
